Artist Statement

Textures and sculpture have always been part of the art I have created. Texture is all about touching and feeling. Sculpture, for me, is all about building. So when I began to work in encaustic, I knew this is where I was meant to be as an artist. All the properties of working with bee’s wax fit the way I like to work spontaneously and build (sometimes with more than a hundred layers and a mix of materials) to tell a story.

Encaustic art (working with bee’s wax) is for me the perfect medium to fuse ideas, wax and oil paint pigments together with wood, rope and a multitude of other materials that keeps growing.

I always want to touch paintings and art work of all kinds. Touching art lets you in and allows you to “feel’ what is going on. The problem is, paintings are almost always not meant to be touched or allowed to be touched (especially in galleries).

When people purchase one of my creations I fully expect them to touch it and to really see and feel some of what’s going on. The sensation of touching lets you experience all the different materials and the art on a whole other level.

The semi translucent quality lets me create many moods. The lusciousness and luminosity, with the ability to be both brilliant and subdued, are characteristics that excite me every time I walk into my studio.
